Washing your hair 101

Washing your hair properly is a key element to ensure healthy hair growth, it also helps maintain your styling much longer.

The problem is that the sentence ‘Washing your hair’ already gives the wrong instruction, because you don’t wash your hair you cleanse your scalp.

The most important part of washing your hair is making sure your scalp is cleansed of styling products and excess oils.

Yet it’s important to keep some of the scalps’ oil this will keep the hair in a  healthy condition.

Step 1

Start by brushing the hair to remove products and knots.

Next, wet the hair with lukewarm water.

Warm water opens the hair cuticle, allowing shampoo to cleanse the hair deeper.

It will help to remove excessive scalp oils and product buildup.

If your scalp doesn’t get oily, you suffer from frizz.

Therefore, you should wash with cold water.

However, choose a temperature that you’re comfortable with.

Step 2

Apply the shampoo to 4 parts of the head.

The top of the head, the sides, the crown and the back.

Massage the shampoo using vertical strokes and applying medium pressure while keeping your fingertips flat.

Start at the face contours.

Begin at the front then work your way to the sides and finish at  the nape of the neck covering all the contours of your head.

Next, start massaging the top of your head, work your way to the inner sides all the way to the back.

From the back of your head work your way back up to the crown and then finish back at the top of your head.

Don’t forget to wash your hair ends by using vertical strokes.

Repeat this massage routine for 3 to 5 times.

Don’t pile the hair up at the top of your hair, to prevent knot formation.

If the first shampoo didn’t lather, repeat this step 2.

Step 3

Towel dry the hair and apply a conditioner.

Apply the conditioner by stroking the hair from the mid-length to the ends.

This will help the hair to soak the conditioner in.

Leave the conditioner in for 5 to 7 minutes, then rinse with cold water.

Cold water will help to close the hair cuticles and the pores.

As a result, it will give the hair shine, reduce frizz, seal in moisture and improve the blood circulation.

Step 4

How you dry your hair will be the key factor for strong and healthy hair.

Keratin is the protein that gives hair its strength and integrity.

When hair is wet, the keratin in the hair cuticle absorbs the water and swells rapidly.

The hair cuticles are pushed open, therefore they rub and tangle, damaging the hair.

At the same time, the keratin bonds of the hair weaken and stretch to the point of breakage.

This is why it’s important for hair to be dried quickly and evenly to a damp stage using as less heat as possible.

Investing in a microfibre towel will help you out.

Dry the hair by gently pressing the towel against the scalp and hair.

Don’t rub! This can cause breakage to the hair.

Apply a heat protectant or leave-in conditioner before combing the hair.

Wet hair is very delicate, so be gentle.

Start combing from the ends and work your way to the top.
